Our Ethical Commitments
Our story began in 1886 when Walter Whittard first set up shop on London’s bustling Fleet Street selling the finest tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Over 130 years later, Whittard of Chelsea has become a global aspirational brand, but we remain true to our founder’s approach: to “buy the best”.
Tea is what we’re best known for, and we’ve spent the last century tracking down the very best for our 100-strong range. From exquisite single origins like our First Flush Darjeeling to seasonal limited editions, every tea we sell represents a distinctive experience with its own intriguing story. We explore the latest trends, flavors and ingredients ? but always stick to our roots.
Black tea is fully oxidized, meaning that molecules in the tea react with oxygen to give the leaves a rich, robust flavor. From classic blends like English Breakfast and Earl Grey to delicate Darjeeling and breezy Ceylon tea, there’s more to black tea than you might expect…
The core difference between green and black tea is oxidation. Green tea is heated to stop oxidation ? preserving that fresh taste and green color that makes it famous. Famed for its fresh, verdant taste, lush green tea hails from China and Japan ? whose different methods of firing and steaming can have a big effect on the final cup.
Our fruit and herbal infusions don't technically contain tea: instead, they're blended from fruit, herbs, spices and flowers. This means that all of our infusions ? with the exception of our herbal mate infusions ? are naturally caffeine-free. There's an extraordinary range of flavors possible, from the natural sweetness of camomile flowers to bright, tart berries and hibiscus flowers.
It’s impossible to care about our products without caring about the people who make our products. We’re proud of our commitment to an ethical, sustainable business model.
We’re members of the Ethical Tea Partnership, a not-for-profit organization which works to improve tea workers’ lives and the environment in which tea is produced.
We work closely with a range of trusted suppliers, making sure our customers get the best quality products, services and care.
