Rooibos - South Africa's 'Red Herb'
Rooibos
Rooibos is a member of the legume family of plants, and is commonly used to make a tisane (herbal tea) in South Africa. Rooibos grows exclusively in the Cederberg Mountain region and around Clanwilliam and Citrusdal.
During summer and early autumn, the plant’s branches are hand-harvested and cut into smaller pieces. The raw Rooibos is then moistened with water, thoroughly bruised, and placed in heaps where it is allowed to oxidize. Rooibos leaves turn red in color during processing.
