Divine Chocolate

Co-Owned by Cocoa Farmers

Why Does the "Bean to Bar" Approach Matter?

What is Fairtrade?

Committed to Empowering Female Cocoa Farmers

Divine Chocolate is a global, farmer-owned chocolate company. We use the amazing power of chocolate to delight and engage.

We exist to help end exploitation in the cocoa industry. We champion the needs of farmers, enabling them to thrive and prosper and together build a sustainable and fair world.

Divine Chocolate is the first and only Fairtrade chocolate company to be co-owned by cocoa farmers. Our mission is to help end exploitation in the cocoa industry, creating a world where farmers thrive and prosper.

Our business model reflects the belief that producers should earn a share of the profits they help to create. That's why Kuapa Kokoo Farmers' Union, a co-operative of 100,000 co-owners, is a shareholder of Divine Chocolate.

Mercy Zaah began cocoa farming in 1986 and joined Kuapa Kokoo in 1999. She has taken free adult literacy classes and English language classes, both funded by Divine Chocolate sales, and became fluent only after a few years. Mercy also learned how to screen print fabrics, another program funded by Divine Chocolate sales, which helps her generate income in the cocoa harvesting off season to support her five children.

Mercy’s commitment to Kuapa Kokoo over the years has resulted in her colleagues electing her as the Treasurer of Adiyaa society and as the President of the Women’s Society. Mercy was also the vice-president of the Dadieso district and was chosen to do a tour throughout the United Kingdom and the United States, lecturing about the importance of Fairtrade.

Since Divine launched in 1998 , we have always encouraged people to value and cherish chocolate more ? by knowing more about the people who depend on it. Through our relationships with cocoa growers in Ghana and Sao Tome, we can trace the cocoa in any bar of chocolate back to the co-operative from which it originated. This bean-to-bar approach demonstrates our commitment to social and economic issues and ensures excellence in quality control.

Understanding the specific journey of a cocoa bean means knowing about the great care and effort that farmers put into growing their cocoa and how important this is to ensure the chocolate we make tastes great!

Fairtrade is an independent, third-party certification* system partnering with more than 1.5 million producers in developing countries. Fairtrade’s mission is to secure fair prices, better terms of trade, and decent working conditions for farmers and workers so they are empowered to build sustainable livelihoods and secure futures for themselves and their communities.

Divine Chocolate and Fairtrade

At Divine Chocolate, each and every product is certified Fairtrade and every ingredient that can be sourced as Fairtrade is Fairtrade certified. Fairtrade certified ingredients in Divine Chocolate are cocoa from Ghana, organic cocoa from Sao Tome, sugar from Malawi, vanilla from Madagascar, and almonds from Pakistan. The key ingredient for chocolate is, of course, cocoa, and this is sourced from Kuapa Kokoo Co-operative in Ghana with over 100,000 primarily smallholder cocoa farmers. Kuapa Kokoo was the first Fairtrade certified smallholder farmers’ organization in West Africa.

Divine Chocolate and Kuapa Kokoo, both led by women, are pioneering progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 5 ? this goal aims to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment.

For more than two decades, Divine Chocolate and our farmer co-op partners have shared a commitment to empowering women. Together, we support women in cocoa farming so they may develop the skills and confidence to grow better cocoa, build better communities, and thrive in business.

For Kuapa Kokoo and Divine, encouragement and mentoring of women has always been a priority. Investing in programs designed to teach valuable personal and professional skills is helping thousands of women bring money into their families, even during cocoa’s off-season.
